Revolutionizing Education and the Internet

 

            As the Internet becomes more ubiquitous, its impacts are very much felt on the way we educate, and the way people receive education. The Internet has made free education more accessible than ever, and information more available. Although there are still areas that has been preserved and not affected by the Internet, I think that the Internet has revolutionized education drastically.
             Some argues that Internet has not done much to revolutionize education because what we are doing in schools now has not changed much since the Internet was created. Although we use the Internet as a tool to aid teaching, the bulk of education is still done in the traditional way: in classroom settings, with a teacher that physically interacts with his or her students. As we see in schools nowadays, although resources and homework can be given through online portals or platforms, lectures and lessons are still a mandatory and significant part of education. Thus, the Internet has not revolutionized education much as it is merely a convenient aid for education without having an actual significant impact on education.
             Furthermore, education is not merely limited to the acquisition of knowledge. It comprises of a whole multitude of aspects, for instance social skills, collaborative capabilities, character and moral values. These are things that cannot be taught through the Internet, and requires interaction, both between teachers and students and among students themselves. Skills such as collaboration cannot be learnt through watching videos or reading about articles online; they have to be slowly built and crafted via interaction between people. Thus, the Internet, though able to deliver the knowledge part of education, cannot fully grasp its complexity, and hence does not do much to revolutionize education as a whole.
             However, I think that the Internet has revolutionized education by making it more accessible than any other time in history.
