Their moral standard was also comparatively very poor as Shakespeare has highlighted all these short comings of the Egyptian society in the character of Cleopatra. The practice of social inbreeding, known as endogamy5, was common among royal houses of Egypt. This practice was carried to the extreme, and even Pharaohs had to marry to their daughters to save the kingdom. In Egypt, this practice had more religious motto rather than simply keeping the property intact within family. The Egyptian was determined that the divine bloodline of Horus6 should remain pure in the royal house. There was also a religious precedent: Osiris7 was married to his sister, Isis8, and the product of that union was Horus, who is the alleged ancestor of the Pharaoh. Therefore, it enhanced the prestige of pharaohs to claim direct blood descent from a god. Osiris and Isis, of course, take the place of Adam and Eve in the Egyptian mythology. This practice continued on down through the generations and reached to Cleopatra V11who married her younger brother Ptolemy XIII and after his death, she married her younger brother Ptolemy XIV. Later, she married the Roman Mark Antony. Mark Antony married her according to Egyptian ritual and rites which annoyed Romans who considered it as betrayal to Roman culture and civilization. Mark Antony has not learned the lesson from tragic death of Julius Caesar , the last Republican ruler, who tried to marry the Egyptian Queen as he was in love with her and did great favour to her by restoring her to throne. But he could not marry her as this was forbidden by Roman Law. In Ancient Rome a marriage was only recognized between two Roman citizens. Shakespeare makes us believe that both Cleopatra and Antony are sailing in different boats and their union is nothing more than disaster as both of them have revolted against their customs. Cleopatra has violated the Egyptian rule by marrying out side the royal family and Antony marries an Egyptian , leaving a roman wife in Rome, which is against the norm of Roman's laws.
