Digging Deeper into America and the Holocuast

Over the past few years, I have taken a variety of Holocaust courses, met numerous Holocaust survivors and visited the Holocaust museums in both Washington D.C. and in Israel. In all of these settings, one thing that I always questioned was why did the United States not do more. I chose to use this book because in several courses that I have taken involving the Holocaust, I have always heard very negative reviews about FDR. I have learned that he had little concern about what was going on in Europe and that he focused mainly on fixing the economy post the Great Depression, The New Deal and the domestic agenda. I was interested in reading another perspective on how an individual felt who was in favor of FDR. .
I felt that although Beir had an excellent compilation of research regarding FDR's attempts to help during the war, the book was more of a list of reasons why FDR was unable to help. In reading the book, I was able to see and understand a Roosevelt enthusiast's view of why the President was unable to help. At this time, FDR had numerous American based issues on his agenda to deal with such as The New Deal and domestic agenda. Beir explained, "Roosevelt held eighty-two press conferences throughout 1933. The persecution of Jews surfaced once" (Beir, p. 71). Although I now understand more about what was going on in America during this time, it is still appalling to me that little aid was given to the Jews simply because people that worked with and for FDR had no connection to the Jewish people It was truly surprising to me that such a religious Jew, like Beir, wouldto mention this at all. In my opinion as a reader, this leaves me with the impression that just because the government officials were not Jewish or did not have Jewish family members, why should they take time out of there day to help millions of people who were dying. Beir did a great job of setting the stage of what was going on in America, but at the same time, didn't go into details regarding certain key events such as the Olympics, the St.
