Like I said in the previous sentence, the director is referencing new beginnings as well as a new frontier. The new beginnings in which could symbolize a women giving birth to a child. The scene starts off very dark, much like a womb. Then after is a series of lights that illuminate the camera's position in the spaceship. Then the camera glides forward and we see the crew in a sleeping state of rest. The crew is almost naked in their round bed, sleeping side by side. It is almost as if they were born into a micro-society where they are unfamiliar to the inhibitions of sexual difference. The spaceship looks very womb like. Very white, which is an image of blankness and innocence. It is also very comforting from the viewer's eye. As the first crew member, Kane, gets up from his slumber, he acts as if disoriented, much like a baby when they come out of the womb. At the same time, the camera focuses a lot on Kane's body, studying it. Much like a mother would study her new born baby's body. (3 min). .
Also, in the film, the crew of Nostromo eats dinner like a big family. The entire crew call and even reference the spaceship as Mother. Over dinner, the topic of discussion is class. The two mechanics are complaining that, "Everybody gets more [money] than us." (25 min). Even the women were getting paid more than them, and this was an issue. This is just is just one of the ways this film expresses feminism and the sexual equality. The director even takes away the first names of the characters to remove any sense of gender. Viewers may see Ripley as a female, and Dallas as a male, but the film does not. .
The next scene I will analyze is where Kane explores a cavern (60 min). This symbolizes the female reproductive system. In this scene, conception and pregnancy occurs, just not in the way we are used too. This happens when Kane makes contact with the egg. It is not what we are accustomed to because it is Kane who gets impregnated.
