(Time 3) When Collins writes, she often comments upon today's society, which makes people reflect on how society is living today. .
Although Collins has written many different type of works for many different ages, her most famous work, and what she is best known for, is a trilogy titled The Hunger Games. This collection includes three novels that are now being made into movies. A major theme of these books is using inspiration from modern times, problems with propaganda control and the right to war. In an interview with Collins, she explained while flipping through television one night she saw many reality TV shows, and then she observed clips from the iraq war. When the two things fused together she said, is when the whole idea of having a war for entertainment as well as punishment came to light. (Suzanne Collins 2).
Furthermore, Collins works with themes dealing with propaganda and how people respond to it in certain situations. In one of Collins novels she wrote, "It's interesting, hearing about her life. We have so little communication with anyone outside our district. In fact, I wonder if the Gamemakers are blocking out our conversation, because even though the information seems harmless, they don't want people in different districts to know about one another." (Hunger Games, 202) This quote helps show an epiphany that Katniss, the main character of the novels, had when she realized the power of human communication. She learned that when the government controls who you can talk to, it is impossible to have all the information. And when information is withheld on such a large scale it can create many problems, and even cause rebellions which leads to a second theme that Collins often includes in her works, the right to war. In an interview with Francis Lawrence, Collins explained that when people are starving being abused and manipulated, it is acceptable to have a rebellion, which leads to war.
