Maurice input causes an uproar and an intensified amount fear of the beast in the group of boys adding panic and additional fear to the beast. Someone shouts in the crowd of boys that the beastie could not possibly come out of the water, Maurice shouts back that it could happen continuing his argument that the beast comes from the sea. Jack catches a sow then proceeds to decapitate the creature, Jack then sharpens a stake on both sides, stabs the head of the sow, and lodges the stake with one end in the head into the earth. "This head is for the beast. It's a gift," (137). Jack offers the beast a gift in efforts of pleasing the beast to prevent events from ensuing between the two. Aside from trying to prevent events between the beast, Deep down Jack is scared of the beast, respecting the fearful figure with a sacrifice in order to pay respects to the beast. Jacks group are all part of the placing of the sow's head on a stake in hopes of avoiding conflict with the beast, the plot twist in this is they all become the beasts they fear of. Jacks group all turn into savages not having a second thought about death as shown with the grisly decapitation of the sow's head.
Savagery added to fear results in an outcome of a tragedy. Simon was venturing into the forest and stumbles upon what everyone thought was the beast, but in reality the beast was a parachutist who had died and got caught in a tree. After find out about this fact, Simon heads back to the fire where the boys currently are, wanting to inform every one of the discovery he had made. Simon upon arriving at the camp trips over a bush and falls to his knees in front of the group of boys in the dark while they are doing a chant dancing around the bonfire. Simon then gets tackled by everyone and they tear into Simon's body with claws and teeth, Simon is killed assuming that he was the beast. "There were no words and no movement but the tearing of teeth and claws," (153).
