Observation Paper: People Vs. Jerad Cross

The jury was then seated in their own marked off section. Watching the jury's reactions to the material being presented in front of them was the most interesting part of observing this trial. All of the jurors were intently trying to grab as much information as possible, and the lawyers were the players presenting the material to them. Lastly, the audience was completely filled. In the front rows were the families of both sides, and what I assumed to be a number of witnesses. Behind them every seat was filled with spectators, like me.
Now that we have looked at some specific courtroom players and their locations, the layout of the courthouse itself was very interesting. The California state seal and the United States flag stood bold behind the judge's stand, in the center of the courtroom. To the left of the judge was a small section, which I assumed to be the witness stand. To the left of that stand appeared to be a section with a few displays, which I'm guessing the defense and/or prosecution used as evidence. On the left side of the courtroom stood the prosecution table, and the defense table was on the right side. Seated at both tables, with sprawled out information on their respected tables, were numerous lawyers. Seated behind the defense table was the defendant, Mr. Jerad Cross. The prosecution and defense tables appeared to be the center of attention while I was there. This material, along with the information in the above paragraph, ultimately created the environment in which this trial took place in. It is important to fully understand the context in which this case took place because it largely affects how everything is perceived within the trial.
Unfortunately, I was only able to make it for the end of trial number F482473. However, just watching the closing arguments of this trial gave me a sense of the serious implications that this trial had. After all, Jerad Cross was facing a second degree murder charge, in which he could be spending the rest of his life in prison.
