The Great American Dust Bowl

Although there were other contributing factors, the thousands of farmers who were encouraged to come to the area and make a living in wheat production was one of the main causes of the top soil erosion that led to the creation of the Dust Bowl – which devastated a region that was never meant to be farm land.
I personally enjoyed reading this book and I learned a lot about the different challenges that the dust bowls created for the people who lived in the region. Also after reading this book it wasn't hard for me to see that it was also a very scary and uninviting place to live as well. I believe that the author Timothy Eagan did a great job in explaining to me the reader the different issues that were involved in the Dust Bowls and he did a great job in explaining the different struggles of the people who lived in the region and who had to endure the dust storms and the bad effects that these storms played on the people not just from an economical standpoint but also from a sociological and psychological viewpoint as well. Also, I believe that he did a great job in explaining the different politics that were involved with that region and he helped me also understand the Dust Bowl Storms from a historical standpoint as well.
The Dust Bowl Storms also happened during a very bleak time for the United States because the country was going thru the great depression as well as dealing with the looming threat of World War II. I feel like that the dust bowls were even harder for the people to deal with from a psychological standpoint because the country was suffering thru a great depression and also dealing with an upcoming war and then you add the devastating dust storms to go along with the high temperatures, the wind and drought and you had a recipe for disaster. Also in my opinion this was a huge humanitarian disaster as well. Because you had many people who came to this region hoping to escape the great depression that had ravaged the cities on the eastern seaboard and the people who came to the region thought they were coming into a great opportunity and would be able to better provide for themselves and for their families.
