Poverty in America

The Arthur did a great job of finding different studies and research that drew similar conclusion in regards to early childhood development. Even in our text it describes that by age four a child learns valuable fine motor skills and by age five they start learning basic logic. .
An article about the effects of your early childhood, and the influence it has on your future. This article was written to examine and study childhood poverty. Why is childhood poverty of importance? What causes childhood poverty? What are the affects of childhood poverty? How can we better solve childhood poverty? In this article there was more than one study done on children. The first study we see is a graph showing the rates of kindergarten proficiencies for the poor, near poor and middle class children. The graph shows that in all areas (recognizing letter, beginning word sounds, counting and shapes, relative size and ordinarily and sequence) the children that were poor, proficiency levels were anywhere from 26%-67% lower than those in the middle class. This study shows that poverty can indeed hinder a child's development especially educational development. The second study we see is how early poverty may be of upmost importance in a child's future. In the article they mention of an experiment called, US Negative Income Tax Experiment. They took a group of kindergarteners an experimental group and a control group. The experimental families got a 50% boost in income. From this increase income they also saw an increase in not only school attendance but also school achievement compared to the control group. When this same thing was done to adolescent group of kids test scores did not change, but they had a higher chance of completing their education. From this experiment we see that the earlier that child is able to be in a more positive based income environment the better it is for there future.
