Media Portrays of Stereotypical Men and Women Roles

The area of society I am investigating is the media and whether the media portrays men and women's roles in stereotypical ways?.
The media by definition encompasses a wide range of forms that communicate and allows for quick and efficient broadcasting of information to an extremely broad audience over an extensive distance. It is a process of producing a disseminating information Therefore, the media create the world and the world makes media. This meaning that the media displays information that may influence individuals to duplicate what they see in the media and live up to what they see in society. The media has tremendous power in shaping the opinions and perceptions of people worldwide. The media plays an important role both in shaping and reflecting gender roles and stereotypes. Even though recently there has been roles in the media where men and women are not shown in stereotypical ways, there are still many traditional, stereotypical images shown. For example, soaps tend to show strong, independent women, however they still show them as young, attractive and sex objects that at times can be weak, unreliable and dishonest. .
In this topic I intend to highlight men and woman's images portrayed in the media. For example showing stereotypical gender roles of femininity, woman as sexual objects, incompetent in the political and economic spheres and decorative elements when it comes to advertisements. Along with men as masculine, brave and non-domestic.
I have chosen this topic because being a female in today's society I feel that this issue affects us as women and I also feel that men are affected by the portrays shown in the media which explains their superior attitudes in today's society. From a young age I have been exposed to the portrayal of women and men on the media and I've just seen it as a norm, but growing up I have seen that many roles are unequal and stereotypical and don't show true various roles of men and women today.
