Historical Accuracy.
Nelson Mandela, the president of South Africa, does what he can to revive the country and bring the residents closer. So he picks out the Springboks, a rugby team originating from South Africa, to bring the country back from the dead. He talks the captain of the rugby team, Francois Pienaar, to see what they can do to win the World Cup. Pienaar thinks this is an impossible mission, but Mandela believes if they become motivated, the can surpass this challenge. Mandela orders the team to do side work apart from their practice to make the country more involved in the team. Mandela gave them this mission to gain support and motivation. This part of the story was edited to show more of a relationship between the two. Mandela's actual first meeting with Pienaar was at the Springbok camp where the whole squad was there (Hollywood). He told them what he wanted them to do then and there. It is portrayed in the movie a little differently. In the movie he had a private meeting with Pienaar about the team. He never had this meeting with only Pienaar. This is one example of how the story was edited to show more emotion.
The Springboks take the orders from Mandela and teach the township kids how to play rugby. Chester, the only dark colored person on the team, is by far the most looked up to by the children. They put the kids into drills on passing and running as they teach the kids the rules of rugby. They show them an example of how it looks to pass, run, and play the game and then let them reciprocate what they did. They not only teach them rules and values of rugby, but they give the children something to look forward to in the future. Not only that but they give the children role models.
