The Effects of Chewing Gum

Did you know gum was originally made out of tree bark? So how did gum change so much overtime? They added artificial sweeteners and other unhealthy ingredients. These unhealthy ingredients can cause GI problems, which is one reason why gum should not be chewed at school. Another issue with gum chewing is because it can trigger TMJ problems. My final reason why gum should not be chewed at school is that it can trick the brain. The first and main reason why gum shouldn't be chewed at school is it can trigger TMJ. I think this is a significant reason because TMJ or temporomandibular joint disorder can cause cramps and pain in the jaws. Don Atkins, DDS, a dentist says gum chewing can lead to over use of the jaw's muscles, which can cause disorder in the jaws. Also chewing gum can raise your risk of getting a cardiovascular disease.
Another issue on why gum should not be chewed at school is because it can cause GI problems. This is an important reason why gum should not be chewed at school because GI problems can cause severe abdominal pain and it can cause you to change your bowel habits. Patrick Takahashi, MD, chief of gastroenterology at St. Vincent Medical Center says," Chewing gum can contribute to IBS, as excess air can be swallowed, which contributes abdominal pain and bloating." Also gum has artificial sweeteners such a sorbitol and mannitol, which then making otherwise healthy people have diarrhea. .
The third and final reason why gum should not be chewed at school is because it can trick the brain. This reason is an important reason because when chewing gum your brain is alerted that the digestive process is about to begin, but no food is going to the stomach. So when the stomach thinks there's no food it can cause bloating, gas, and discomfort occasionally. Gum chewing can also upset your stomach by throwing off the stomach's acidity. Some people might argue that gum should be chewed at school because it helps students focus.
