Loving Your Neighbor

" He answered saying the man that showed mercy. Jesus then said unto him "Go, and do thou likewise." .
Our primary responsibility is to the fellow believer. If our fellow believer is struggling it is our duty to support them in whatever cause they may need physically or spiritually. This is the purpose of the benevolent fund, for it is important to support fellow believers. To our worldly neighbors, all we can do is preach the gospel that God has come to save his people. This does not mean that we let the fellow man starve because he does not have the love of Jesus in his heart. It is not our duty to judge our neighbor. We must be like the Good Samaritan, who took the man in, clothed him and sent him on his way (Reitsma).
This brings us to the issue of why or for what reason we treat our neighbor in this regard. There is a common error in the world around us regarding the love of one's neighbor. The idea that Christians must love all men because God loves all men is quite prevalent even in the church today. These churches often deny that God loves all men in the death of Jesus Christ, but on the contrary that he loves everyone through the preaching of the gospel. This is the "well-meant" offer of salvation to all men and is where the roots of common grace are found. This passage is used by many to support the error of common grace. The Protestant Reformed Churches have their beginning in this issue, when its founders were expelled from the Christian Reformed church for their rejection of common grace (VanderWal). If this passage does not mean that God loves all men, we must know what the proper meaning is. There is no question that the Christian must love his enemies and do good unto all men. Galatians 6:10 "As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are the household of faith." It is also true that the Christian must desire the salvation of his unbelieving neighbor.
