Affirmative action

Affirmative action is the idea that discrimination in employment and education because of race or gender should be ended. It makes employers and schools make extra efforts to hire and admit people from underprivileged races into their workplaces or schools. Affirmative action puts minorities like African Americans, Hispanics, and women at an advantage based solely on their race or gender and it is supposed to put them on an even playing field with the majority which is white men. With the University of Michigan case, qualified white students were passed over because they were white and the school felt obligated to admit less qualified minority students. .
Affirmative action is a controversial subject because many people from the majority feel they are being put at a disadvantage just because they are white. I believe the concept of affirmative action and giving preference to people based on their race or gender should be done away with. I want people to be judged by their qualifications not by something they have no control over like their race. I want people who work hard to be rewarded with jobs and colleges they deserve, and not be cheated because they were born white. I believe then that all people will be treated equally when applying for jobs or college. Supporters for affirmative action want to continue to have minorities put at an advantage. The opposing side would like to continue the ways of less qualified people being accepted just because of who they are not because of anything they have done. If this continues to happen it will only create tension between races and will cause more problems than it is solving. The goal of affirmative action was to put minorities on a level playing field but it has gotten to the point where they are being put at an advantage, and that should be put to an end. .
One of the main ideas of affirmative action was to make things fair and equal.
