The causes of the problems mentioned in the videos all stem from a breakdown of the family. A lack of religious education in the home led to idolatry of sex as fulfillment of self. In "Lost Children of Rockdale County" a lack of structure in the home caused a young girl o seek relationships elsewhere. Human nature is naturally weak and when nobody is encouraged down the right path, problems arise. Evil can be a deceptive force. The young girl who was the apex of the "Lost Children of Rockdale County" film and her mother did not realize just how poor the decisions they were making were, and how gravely those decisions affected their lives. In "the Vanishing Black Family" Timothy idolized his power to create. He idolized himself and his deeds, but had he focused on the power of God, he would not have lost his way. In Bernard's story, his mother was a stronger woman. The problem lied in his surrogate father, who represented the typical black inner-city male. His aggression was a bad influence on Bernard because he was Bernard's only father figure. .
The lack of God in all the aforementioned homes is where both the problem and the solution lie. If more people were aware of the situations of struggling black inner-city families, then people would begin to make social changes. The only way to solve these problems is a greater appreciation of scripture and an understanding of the natural laws. If the people who were responsible for aiding these struggling families first and foremost encouraged a religious presence in all their lives, values would be reinforced and social problems would decrease. People would abandon the welfare crutch and climb out of their poverty. .
I agree with the traditional Christian perspective for the solving of these problems. While religion may not necessarily be the answer, some form of community, pride and direction to attach to would alleviate many of the issues plaguing the families in the videos.
