Soon it seems like the rainbow has come down from the sky and sprayed itself on the people.
This new home country of mine has its great festivals and celebrations too. The way in which festivals like Thanksgiving and Christmas are celebrated is a great joy to see. But, I feel that they are becoming more formalized and would personally prefer them to be celebrated more traditionally. The sprit of Christmas and the concept of celebrating Christmas with the entire family, exchanging gifts and the idea of Santa Claus for children is totally fascinating. Christmas is not as big a deal in India as here and that is quite sad. But the traditions and festivals are not the only things that are poles apart in India and U.S.A.
The schooling system is yet another example of how different the two places are. In India the education system is quite outdated. The textbooks used are often a decade old and no revisions have been made to them. Some of them often mimic ancient manuscripts of some long lost civilization The exams in almost all courses require the students to memorize long answers and big notes on each topic. Rather than using their brains, the students end up just cramming the information for the exams and then letting it out on the paper in the form of lengthy notes. The answers themselves end up looking like professional essays. The worst part is that even the professors expect such long answers from the students and grades are awarded based on the quantity rather than the quality of the matter presented. .
On the other hand in America, the education system as interpreted by me is totally different. The reference material seems to be updated regularly and so the information gained is up to date. The majority of exam and test papers involve multiple choices, so the preparation for the tests becomes a lot easier. Personally I have experienced that the tests become more appealing and something that I look forward to a lot more than I did when I was in India.
