Movie Review: The String

The movie "The Sting" takes place in 1936 in Chicago. Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) and his friend and mentor Luther Coleman (Robert Earl Jones) scam one of Doyle Lonnegan's (Robert Shaw) man out of $10,000. Lonnegan, who wants to make an example of them, kills Luther. Hooker looks for revenge and decides with one of Luther's old friends Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) to pull "The Sting", a con, on him.
This movie won 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Adapted Score. When the movie came out in 1973 it grossed $68,450,000. Even though the movies was made in the 70's it is pretty realistic for the time it takes place, the 1930's.
The dialogue uses slangs which were used by con artists of the 30's. The characters were also found in the time the movie takes place. There were the grifters who scam people out of there money. There was Doyle Lonnegan the rich man that doesn't follow the law. There was the cop Lt. William Snyder (Charles Durning) that wasn't very honest himself. The costumes were also the costumes of the time. The tweed suits, the gentlemen's hats, the difference between the lower class and the upper class clothes. .
The only thing that wasn't in the period was the soundtrack. The popular music during the 30's was jazz, but in the movie the music used is music that was popular just before the great depression, ragtime music. Even though the music doesn't mach the music of the time period it works well with the movie. "The Sting" is a great movie to watch.
