Troy didn't like the way Bono was always hassling him about buying drinks for her and going to see her. Also, Bono knew what Troy was doing was immoral and he could not be around Rose without feeling guilty. Bono tried to make Troy realize what he was doing to himself and his family. When Troy was slowly building a literal fence around the house for Rose, Bono said to him, "Some people build fences to keep people out and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold onto you all. She loves you" (201). Troy is hesitant to build the fence and it stayes unfinished for quite a while because he realizes that Bono is right. Bono uses Troy's promotion as a cover up for the reason they do not spend a lot of time together anymore. "Since you got your promotion, I can't keep up with you. Used to see you every day.
