Troy didn't like the way Bono was always hassling him about buying drinks for her and going to see her. Also, Bono knew what Troy was doing was immoral and he could not be around Rose without feeling guilty. Bono tried to make Troy realize what he was doing to himself and his family. When Troy was slowly building a literal fence around the house for Rose, Bono said to him, "Some people build fences to keep people out and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold onto you all. She loves you" (201). Troy is hesitant to build the fence and it stayes unfinished for quite a while because he realizes that Bono is right. Bono uses Troy's promotion as a cover up for the reason they do not spend a lot of time together anymore. "Since you got your promotion, I can't keep up with you. Used to see you every day. Now I don't even know what route your on" (212). In fact, Troy's adulterous relationship is the reason for the loss of their friendship. The fence between Bono and Troy was built because of the lack of trust between the men. .
Rose, Troy's wife, had been there for him through the up's and down's of life. She always supported and loved him unconditionally and she worked her hardest to make their marriage work. When Troy told Rose that he had had an affair and was going to be a father to another woman's child, Rose was devastated. After Rose found out she responded, .
All of a sudden it's "we." Where was "we" at when you was down there rolling around with some god-forsaken woman? "We" should have come to an understanding before you started making a damn fool of yourself. You"re a day late and a dollar short when it comes to an understanding with me (205).
Troy's lack of commitment ruined their marriage. A marriage is a sacred union between two people and Troy saw it a mark of stability. Troy hardly ever returned home after work and when he did it was to change his clothes and leave to go down to the bar or to go see Alberta.
