Anthem Essay

"The only things which taught us joy were the power we created in our wires, and the Golden One" (Chapter IX). This quote shows how the world around them built to satisfy their needs has failed. Equality 7-2521 and The Golden One are flaws in this system. They were disturbed by its repetitive natures so they broke free and did something unheard of by anyone. The making of the glass box was a bold move intended to show the reader the arrogance of the so-called "perfect" system. The Golden One played a significant role in showing the necessity of partnership with other individuals and the important role of love that was forgotten from past civilizations.
"Men have no cause to exist save in toiling for other men" (Chapter VII). This quotation spoken by Similarity 5-0306 is a blatant lie. It seems that it would be obvious to anyone living in this system that men are extremely important. If no men lived no one would live. Reproduction would cease and the population would suffer greatly. The Palace of Mating would run dormant. And essentially life would come to an abrupt screeching halt.
"The glass box in our arms is like a living heart that gives us strength. We have lied to ourselves. We have not built this box for the good of our brothers" (Chapter VII). This quotation is where the brainwashed instincts of Equality 7-2521 kick in. He realizes his self-assumed thoughts of betrayal to his brothers. This is also a turning point for him. He now realizes that individual pride is not something to be ashamed of, but something to be proud of. He now focuses more on the good of himself than the good of his brothers. This change of events inspires him to flee from the dreaded system of his "bothers" for a new individualized life. .
In conclusion, these three quotes are very important parts of the story. They have very deep meaning. One shows the attempt of the system to satisfy the human mind.
