Schizophrenia is a group of psychotic disorders in one that include/involve mayor disturbances in perception language, thought, emotions, and behavior: "The individual withdraw from people and reality often into a fantasy life of delusion and hallucinations" (Huffman, K 2002). Schizophrenia is difficult to understand although it has been known to be a common brain disorder. According to Dr. Nancy Anderson, there are multiple factors of this disorder, which include changes in the chemistry, structure and genetic factors in the brain. Dr. Anderson also mentions that viral infections and head injuries can be factors of Schizophrenia, but it is not in any was contagious. " Schizophrenia is probably a group of related diseases, some of which are caused by one factor and some by another" (Anderson, N 1995-1999).
Researchers have found that one out of every one hundred people develop schizophrenia. It has also been found that the disorder starts earlier in men than in woman and it is quite rare for young children to get it. In men, it usually starts around 16 to 20 years of age and in woman it is 20 to 30 years of age (Huffman 2002). When a person is affected with this illness they tend to withdraw from their family and friends. Some people confuse this disorder with "split personality," in contrast, it means "split mind" they are always being confused. Eugen Bleur intended to refer "split mind" to a split between "subjective feelings or affect and the thought being experienced" (Walter, R 2002). Individuals with this disorder are not dangerous to others; on the other had they are most likely to be victims of the violence and crime (especially to them selves) instead of them actually committing a crime (psychiatry 24x7, 2002).
