A separate peace

There was also trips like to the beach that weakened the relationship of the two. Gene felt when Finny asked him to join him to a trip to the beach that he was keeping him from his studies. Studies that were so important to Gene in his quest to become valedictorian. This angered Gene, but couldn't build himself up to say no. The trip caused Gene to fail a crucial test in trigonometry. The climax of the story also happened at the same tree. During one of the late nights of studying interrupted by Finny, another attempt of a jump from the tree was to happen. Only the guilt built up by Finny into Gene made him go. As Finny led going up the tree, Gene jolted the tree causing Finny to lose his balance. Finny hit the ground under the tree with a loud thud, the fall ended up breaking his leg. .
             There were other characters in the story that had problems. One of which was Leper Leperlier, a non-conformist, one to make his own ideas, and thinks war life fits his style. Leper was one that would go off on his own and do his own things. Such as when the other boys went to work on the railroad tracks for help on the war he went off on his ski's and visited places that were surrounded by the nature life. He had a unique mind, viewed things in different ways from others. Leper set his own path down, such as when he was the first to enlist out of Devon. All it took was a visit from recruiters and a video of something that Leper enjoyed, skiing. Leper was to join the elite ski force of the U.S. Everyone thought he was crazy to ever think he could last in war fare. But he didn't mind the criticism and he stuck to his word. Only lasting a couple of months, Leper wrote a urgent letter to Gene to come and rescue him because he had escaped from war. Leper's actions are a example of insecurity, not knowing himself well enough. Going through war caused Leper to realize a few things about himself, that he wasn't fit for war and he was going crazy.
