Jim Elliot

 

            Philip James Elliot was born on October 8, 1927 in Portland, Oregon. While Jim was growing up, many missionaries visited his home. At the ago of eight, Jim accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior.
             Jim went to Benson Polytechnic High School where he majored in architectural drawing. During his high school years, He developed the skill of preaching.
             When Jim graduated from high school, he went to Wheaton College. His goal was to devote his life to Christ. While Jim was in college, He preached in youth groups in the Wheaton area. One summer he visited Mexico with some Missionaries for six weeks to learn Spanish.
             In 1952, Jim was able to go to Ecuador with Peter Fleming to work with the Quichuas people; establishing a missionary post and air strip.
             In 1953 he got married to Elizabeth Harvard. In 1955 they began their work with the Auca tribe. For several weeks they were using an airplane to fly over their tribes and drop crates of supplies into their territory; then they decided to land the plane next to the village and walk into their village and make contact with the Indians. The first contact that was made was their last.
             Jim Elliot, His wife, and five other men that were helping them in equador were found dead in the jungle. The tribe thought that they were there to hurt them. They didn't know that they were going to give them the word of God. All of there belongings and supplies were brought back to the states where they were buried.
