Two worlds, two lives.

 

            
             Early in the history of San Francisco, the South of Market area was home to both working-class residents and the exclusive homes of South Park and Rincon Hill.Comparing this two worlds in the story "South of the Slot" written by Jack London existed a working-class area, the home of workingmen, craftsmen, and others, all living in poor buildings and cheap rooming houses and hotels, this was the home of Freddie Drummond and in the other hand there was another world, North of the slot were the theaters, hotels,banks and all those things where rich people used to live, here Bill Totts came to play an important role in the story, due to his love for a girl that changed his way of life.
             The first personality shown in the story was Freddie Drummond,he made a practice of living in the two worlds, he was a professor in the University of California, and it was the first to cross the world over the Slot. He lived there for six months in the ghetto or poor neighborhoods, in there he started to work and people were quite different, they were distant, suspiciuos because Freddie was new, he had no antecendents in there, even his hands were soft, but there he started to work harder earning more money, then he work in another job and so on. In the six months he worked there, he developed an extraordinary way of being a good worker, ke kept notebooks, he studied the workers way of living and language, then he could talk more intelligently. This guy came to know all the working people way of life by working beside them ". but he was there, he decided not to change conditions, but to observe.".In appearance, he was simple, a great athlete, a big owner of great culture, has clear thoughts and knew what to mention always. .
             In the other world, another personality that came into the story is Bill Totts, who was different in every aspect. In the north part of the slot, where the clubs, banks, shop malls were located, is where this guy could drink, smoke, fight, and go to parties.
