Affirmative Action

 

            Affirmative action is beneficial to some people; but not everybody. Affirmative action is a program that demands a chosen number of minorities to be given a job or be admitted into a school. In most cases it does help out the minorities, but hurts the Americans that should be given the job. This essay will give examples of how affirmative action is right, wrong, and justified in some cases.
             An example of how it is wrong is if there are 100 people applying for a job. There are 50 whites and 50 minorities. The company is required to hire at least four minorities, with affirmative action. All of the people applying for the job take their interviews and a list is made of who should be hired. The top ten people on the list include eight whites and two minorities. Those are the people that should get the job, but it is required for four minorities to be hired. The bottom two whites do not get the job and two less qualified minorities are hired. This should not happen. This is the main reason that affirmative action is wrong.
             In a different case, affirmative action is useful. It forces companies to hire minorities. This makes the company look good because they have a wide variety of workers working in their companies. It also makes America look better because it makes the unemployment for minorities go down. In another case, there are 1000 people applying for a private school. The school will take 125 whites and 75 minorities. The top 20 on the list of the grades on the placement test contained 150 whites and 50 minorities. This gives the minorities, who may not have had the education of one of the white, a shot at a better education. It also makes the school more diverse.
             As you can see, there are two different views that you can take on affirmative action. In the different cases above it gives different scenarios and the out comes of affirmative action. You could see it as a great idea that helps out minorities, or a bad idea that gives under qualified people the jobs.
