Humor and its Impact

" Simple jokes are used by many to put themselves and others in better moods. For example, John Callahan is a quadriplegic who is confined to a wheel chair for the rest of his life. John is a political cartoonist, and makes a living through writing jokes and funny cartoons. He also writes jokes about people with mental problems, disabilities, and special circumstances. Mr. Callahan believes that humor is a key factor in lifting the spirits of those that are unfortunate. According to Gary Goshgarian in Exploring Language, .
"Few cartoonists would dare to make fun of the handicapped. However, John Callahan's cartoons regularly depict subjects such as the handicapped, alcoholics, anorexics, and criminals. Callahan, himself a quadriplegic, explains that admitting that such things have a "sick humor" to them allows us to confront these issues more openly in our society".
Likewise, I myself use humor every day to ease through awkward situations, make people smile, and lift the spirits of all those around me.
Humor I believe is a way of strengthening relationships between two or more people. For instance, if you have ever felt awkward around someone or a group of people, I find that making others laugh sets up an opening where people can introduce themselves. Since first impressions are crucial when meeting other individuals, if a person makes you laugh, there is a good chance you will get to like that person, thus developing what could turn into a great friendship or a strong relationship. Humor is my way of breaking the awkward silence every person goes through without making too much of a personal statement. Comedy is also used as a form of entertainment. It is a fun and social event for either a group of friends or a couple to go see a comedian perform. It provides a fun environment where everyone can laugh and have a good time. Laughter is the ingredient that keeps people upbeat and happy.
