The Effects of Acupuncture and Pregnancy

The blessing of pregnancy can be a gift that is accompanied by many "extras". Often you"ll hear women make reference to the physical as well as psychological discomfort they are experiencing while going through the stages of pregnancy. These "extras" range from morning sickness to insomnia. Although it would be easy for a doctor to prescribe medications for the expected mother, there is a concern that harm may be caused to the developing fetus because it involves putting chemicals into the body. Instead, Traditional Chinese Medicine use the ancient method of acupuncture to relieve the mother (and her fetus) of any distress.

Acupuncture dates back to about two thousand years.# It is a model of medicine that promotes health through altering Qi flow within the body. In, The Web That Has No Weaver, acupuncture was described as a Yang treatment- because it moves from the outside to the inside, with the idea that "the insertion of very fine needles into points along the Meridians can rebalance bodily disharmonies."#.

There have been research studies conducted on the idea that the use of acupuncture can help promote pregnancy.# In a study published by the medical journal, Fertility and Sterility, it was found that acupuncture increases the chance of pregnancy in women undergoing in-vitro fertilization (it should be noted that the exact effect acupuncture may have on the uterus and reproductive system is not known). The research study included 160 patients who were undergoing in-vitro fertilization. After receiving acupuncture treatments for six weeks, an ultrasound showed that- in the control group, 26 percent of the women (21 out of the 80 patients) became pregnant. Out of the patients who received acupuncture treatments, 42 percent of the women (34 of the 80), became pregnant. These findings suggest that by a woman relaxing, her chances of becoming pregnant may increase.
