From Patriotism to understanding

After comparing the poem to the prose, the poem seems to convey the patriotic side of the war very effectively by using emotive references to England. The prose on the other hand just shows the reader how certain people involved in the war must use patriotism to get through the experience. Both techniques are efficient but the poem does seem to convey a more emotional response. .
As the war continued some men began to think that maybe it wasn't worth dying for your country, they began to protest about the war. Siegfried Sassoon is one of these men, his poems are very different from Brookes and concentrate on protest. Sassoon's "The Death-Bed" is split into six stanzas that appear to follow no apparent pattern. Since he is trying to show how he thinks that being dead is better than being at war, a lot of the imagery he uses is of peace: -.
"Silence and safety, and his mortal shore.
Lipped by the inward, moonless waves of death".
We know this through the use of the words "silence" and "safety" which obviously describes something better than war, these are abstract nouns since they are things we cannot see. It is very obvious that Sassoon is protesting about the war: -.
"He's young, he hated war; how should he die.
when cruel old campaigners win safe through?".
Here he is obviously questioning why the war has taken place and why young men should die whilst others in exactly the same position live to fight another day. He also describes what the soldier is thinking about, as he is lying there dying: -.
"Bird-voiced, and bordered with reflective flowers.
And shaken hues of summer; drifting down,.
He dipped contented oars, and sighed, and slept.".
This is a description of what life was possibly like previous 1914, and furthers the point that Sassoon is continuously protesting about the war. The style of this poem is that it speeds up in moments of pain, rhythm is also used to show the soldier coming in and out of reality.
