             The aim of this report is to catch a grip on why and how tobacco is such a big industry today. It is based on information made available by Gene Borio founder of "www.tobacco.org-.
             History.
             According to "NCSU Libraries- Originally, Native Americans in the eastern United States grew "Nicotiana rustica-, which was the first form of tobacco introduced in England and Portugal. "Tabacam-, first introduced to the Spanish, was obtained from Mexico and South America. It has been the preferred "tobacco- since settlers in Jamestown, Virginia, began growing it. .
             In Sweden, tobacco was first mentioned in the custom accounts year 1601, after it became an important import commodity. Already in 1641, the tobacco industry was monopolized. During the 17th century all cities in Sweden had to allocate soil for the purpose of tobacco cultivation. One of the cultivators was Jonas AlstrÖmer who also introduced the potato in Sweden.
             Economic importance.
             Without question, tobacco is an important export commodity and a substantial source of foreign exchange for many developing nations. It is also a major generator of rural employment and provides the means for peasant farmers to break away from mere sustenance agriculture. Tobacco cultivation utilizes more labor than most other crops.
             In the foreseeable future, farmers will continue to invest in tobacco production as long as consumer demand for tobacco products, and as long as they can be assured that their crops will sell quickly and profitably. Equally as important, as prudent agricultural businessmen, they will invest in new opportunities as they arise.
