Petruchio is going to start taming his lovely Kate, but first they have to get to know each other and eventually get married. Petruchio will kill her with kindness as Kate is very angry about having to marry him. "The virtues spoke of, and thy beauty sounded, myself am moved to woo thee for my wife."(Page 87, Lines 200-202) Petruchio is trying to woo Kate by his kind remarks, but Kate being the shrew that she is doesn't buy it. Heffernan adds, "Even in Petruchio's hasty wooing of Kate they jest about there relationship in terms of in terms of the copulation of horses."(Heffernan, Page 336) Heffernan refers to the grappling with words between Petruchio and Kate. Kate calls Petruchio a jade which is an impotent man. Kate becomes more and more shrewish by the minute. "Petruchio shows up to the wedding hours late, drunk, and wearing the type of clothes that you would wear to a hanging."(Page 119, Lines 42-62) By showing up to the wedding a mess, Kate has extreme odium for Petruchio. Petruchio forces Kate to leave for the taming school in Verona even though they are missing there own wedding reception, for the taming process continues.
Petruchio takes Kate to Verona which is Petruchio's own taming school. Petruchio will tame Kate like a falcon, "My falcon now is sharp and passing empty; and till she stoop she must not be full-gorg"d for then she never looks upon her lure. Another way I have to man my haggard, to make her come and know her keeper's call."(Page 151, Lines 90-194) Petruchio will starve Kate until she listens and he will also not let her sleep until she obeys everything he says. (What a guy) Heffernan explains in further detail, " In refusing meat to his haggard Petruchio is attempting to enforce obedience by showing her that she will be fed only at the good disposition of her keeper, and as a reward for her own kindness and good behavior, she will be "full gorg"d"."(Heffernan, Page 332).
