A Sinful Messiah

Koresh joined the Davidians in 1984 after being expelled by a conventional Seventh - Day Adventist congregation. After proving himself vital to Lois Roden, leader of the Davidians at the time, and to the cult as well, Koresh's rise through the group's hierarchy during the next two year was nothing short of miraculous. However, there was still one obstacle in his way. Koresh became involved in a power struggle for leadership with Lois Roden's eldest son, George Roden. After a confrontation in which George appeared with a machine gun, Koresh and his followers immediately left the compound. But this was not the end but rather the beginning. Koresh briefly established him own desolate congregation after purchasing a 40-acre property in Palestine, Texas, safely away from Waco, Texas. At this point, Koresh promised that he would return to Mount Carmel and reign as king. The only thing that he lacked was an army. Soon enough, Koresh and several of his followers, called the Might Men, returned and engaged in a gun battle with Roden and his supporters. Although Koresh was charged with attempted murder, the charges were in time dropped. Luckily, George Roden was now out of the picture due to charges of murder. Koresh had the loyalty of most of the Davidians in Mount Carmel. As a result, he stepped into the power of the Davidians. (Rifkind, 67). .
David Koresh was the leader of a destructive cult. Koresh and his followers fit into the characteristics of destructive cults. 1.) The cult was authoritarian in its power structure. Koresh was regarded as the supreme authority. He claimed to have the only and final ruling on all matters (F.A.C.T. Nec, Inc.). 2.) The cult's leader tends to be charismatic, determined, and domineering. Koresh persuades his followers to drop their lives and follow him. The leader then takes control of his followers" possessions, money, and lives. For example, to cover expenses within the Davidian cult members donated their checks if they were allowed to work outside of the compound.
