This makes them fell that ending their lives is better than going into the real world to experience new and better things. They tend to "lose a sense of hope and a sense of the future" (Brown). .
Secondly, teenagers may commit suicide due to low self-esteem. Self -esteem is self respect. Having little to no self- respect makes them feel that they are useless and worthless in society. These teenagers are "hurt and humiliated by their self-rejection" (Suicidal Prevention"). They tend to see themselves as "losers and as someone who does not deserve anything"(Lester 69). Having these feelings and the mentality that there is no need to be alive will eventually lead to self- destruction.
Another reason why teenagers end their lives is trouble. Trouble means to disturb the mental calm and contentment of others. Being a teenager you want to experience many things. You want to see the many challenges that are waiting for you to grasp. However, experiencing too much may lead to something beyond your control in which you would have to face the law or your parents. Being afraid to face them as well as the consequences, many teenagers are in desperate need of a way out. That is when suicide comes into place. To them ending their lives will make things better. It makes them feel relieved due to the fact that they will not have to face the consequences. .
Alcohol or drug abuse is another factor of teenage suicide. "Studies show that about 50% of young people who commit suicide have a recent history of substance abuse" (Suicidal Prevention"). According to Emile Durheim's sociological theory of suicide:.
Bill Carpenter, a 17 year-old juvenile delinquent, was found hanging in his room at the detention center after being arrested for drunk-driving incident in which he killed three pedestrians. This arrest followed a series of previous arrests for armed robbery, assault, and possession of drugs.
