"The Crime of the Century"

They then hid his body in a culvert. They then phoned the Franks letting them know that their son had been kidnapped and is unharmed, and would be returned after they received a $10,000 ransom. Also they send more details in the morning and told them don't contact the police.
When they sent the Franks the ransom note they used the name of George Johnson. And list the details on how the money should be send. The ransom money should be old, unmarked and in twenty and fifty dollar bills only. Also put the bills in a cigar box wrapped in white paper with the ends seal with wax. But before the Franks had received the ransom note a body was found. The body did belong to Bobby Franks. The body was discovered by a rail road worker. He had seen a foot sticking out of the convert.
The murderers were convinced that no one would link two wealthy young men with such a crime. However Leopold dropped his glasses while dumping the body. The glasses had been made by a local optician and were of an unusual design. The optician's records showed that only three pairs of glasses were sold. The other two people came up with clean alibis. So that meant the glasses belonged to Leopold. The two men were taken into custody by the police and under questioning, Loeb confessed to the crime.
Since Leopold and Loeb were "pampered in everyday life, the boys were also pampered in jail. Stein's Restaurant catered to their need for good food, cigarettes and liquor, which was sneaked into them since it was Prohibition times." (Bardsley par 83). The famous lawyer, Clarence Darrow, was employed to defend the two men. With the evidence that was available to the court, Darrow knew he could not obtain a not guilty verdict. So their plea changed from "not guilty" to "guilty". With the plea to guilty the judge would make the decision, not a jury. Darrow said "where responsibility is divided by twelve, it is easy to say "away with him"; but, your honor, if these boys are to hang, you must do it-- it must be your cool, premeditated act, without a chance to shift responsibility"( Linder par 10).
