Depression falls into many different categories, there are different kinds of depression varying in intensity from mild to moderate or severe. The main kinds of depression are dysthymic disorder, major depression, and bipolar disorder. Dysthymic Disorder is a chronic depression this means it is longer lasting but it is not as intense as other kinds of depression, this disorder is characterized by general apathy and fatigue and usually lasts at least two years, major depression is a very severe depression it is mostly characterized as a suicidal depression but major depression is more intense and dangerous, it is characterized, as mentioned, by suicidal thoughts or tendencies, self-mutilation, along with many of the other depression symptoms. Bipolar Disorder is more commonly called "Manic-depression." People with Bipolar Disorder experience about two weeks of Major Depression and one week of hyperactivity and go changing symptoms around time, all of these depression symptoms can be diminished by taking SSRIs as your antidepressant medication.
There are 3 main factors for the cause of depression; these are biological, psychological, and social factors that mainly cause depression. Genetic factors say that if a person's family member has the disorder that person may inherit it, environmental factors say that environmental situations such as stress may cause it, and biological factors discuss that people suffering from depression is because of imbalances of neurotransmitters which are natural substances that allow brain cells to communicate with one another. The two transmitters implicated in depression are norepinephrine and most importantly serotonin, it has been proved that people with depression have low serotonin levels and with SSRIs these neurotransmitters can be balanced so that they work correctly and eliminate the symptoms.
