             It was in fact the disadvantages of the ferries that were a very important issue that helped the authorities in deciding to build the bridge. The city planners were quick to understand that the strategic location of Manhattan and New York justified the building of a bridge that would connect the two land masses. Even if the bridge was built above the east river, the ferry services could continue as an ancillary service that would enhance the net worth of the region. Because of an ancillary service, transportation between Brooklyn and Manhattan would become quicker.

             The bridge also served to transport a lot of immigrant workers to new York and Manhattan and is often referred to as the "immigrant bridge'. The bridge was instrumental in creating the rich cultural diversity of the cities of New York because it was the route taken by many to reach New York in search of jobs and better prospects. The early workers who reached Brooklyn and Manhattan contributed very much to the economic aspects of the cities because most of them were immigrant workers from many countries and their labor was very much important for the country to build its infrastructure. The industrial boom that was caused by the cultural exchanges that happened between Manhattan and New York were also significant. The bridge helped to foster cooperation between the residents of Manhattan and New York and also helped in the development and consolidation of the two cities. .
             In the book, The Complete History of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, it stated, "A few years ago Brooklyn was regarded only as "a dormitory of New York." But lately the state of things thus described are rapidly changing. Manufactories have sprung up on every hand, and the steam whistle, the hum of machinery, the long lines of operatives, male and female, and the trucks and cars loaded with her produce, are met on both sides." [Green, 1883].
