Math

My major in school is Advertising Graphic Design. I am in my second year as a student in this program. In this major, math is rarely used but there are something's you do that deal with math. In projects that I have done in my two years I have used math in a variety of ways. I do a lot of measuring which requires simple math.
While doing a project on the computer the assignment might call for a particular size or dimension for the project. If that were the case I would have to measure out the dimensions on the computer. Most of my projects are pretty much always 8.5" by 11" inches. Sometimes if I am creating a poster the size of that would be 17" by 11" inches. I've had to make many things for my class projects. They range from business cards, which are a certain dimension to letterheads to restaurant menus to brochures. All of these different layouts have different dimensions for which each is created. The programs that we use which are usually Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Quark Express have rulers built in that help you with the measuring. You can use guidelines to make sure everything is lined up perfectly and to make sure everything is the proper height and width. When I have to cut board to mount my projects on I have to measure out all of the dimensions. Sometimes when I have a border around my piece that I am mounting and that is another measurement I have to use math on. In my Color Theory class, we have to cut shapes out of high Intensity colored paper and make different things with them. These shapes have to be certain lengths and widths. Some of these shapes are right triangles and to make sure that I have made them the right size I do the Pythagorean theorem to find out if all the sides are the right size. The Pythagorean theorem is a + b = c. When I make circles I draw them with a compass so that the circle is straight and not uneven. Everything in my classes that consists of math is a lot of measuring which requires math.
