The Jungle

" This is the part of town in which houses Chicago's biggest slaughtering and meat packing industry. Oddly enough Jurgis finds a job rather quickly from when they arrive in Chicago and starts working at the meat packing plant. Throughout the book Jurgis works at many other places including a fertilizer plant. Sinclair uses this chance to show his readers what it was like working in this kind of atmosphere. The meat packing plant is very dark and dangerous. In the summer it gets extremely hot inside the plant making working conditions fatal. During the progress of the book the readers see where many men die working inside these plants. The health risks abound inside these plants with the bosses of these plants not worrying at all about his workers. If a man got hurt on the job or twisted their ankle as Jurgis did in the story then the result would be that he is fired with no job and unable to work. The businesses took no responsibility in their workers care. The bosses would make the workers work over time without pay to be able to process bad or spoiled meat while the health inspector was gone. The bosses of the industry were some of the most corrupt people of the time and their mane focus was to make money. When Jurgis and Ona finally have children they are sent to sell newspapers downtown. There were no laws on the age in which children could work. The sausage factory was one of the worst. This is where all of the left over remains of the animals that were being slaughtered came to be processed whatever way possible. Sinclair tells how dead rats, droppings, spoiled meat, human body parts, and whatever would fall in would be processed into sausage to be eaten. When Ona finally gets a job she is cornered and finally raped by Conner one the most popular bosses and political figures of the city. She is nothing but an immigrant so nothing lawfully can be done about this because the whole city is corrupt.
