"They use everything about the hog expect the squeal"(Sinclair 34) stated the tour guide as he laughed while talking to the people on the tour of the meat packing industry in chapter 3 of the novel The Jungle written by Upton Sinclair. In the novel The Jungle does a well job of telling, along with showing what the meat industries of Chicago actually consist of. Sinclair corrupts the "American Dream" that the immigrants have imagined since migrating here to America. The immigrants grew excitement knowing they were going to receive jobs, live on land of acceptance, and begin living the "American Dream". That was until they found a place that contained judgment and hardships along with happiness, and corruption and cruelty along with the work industry. Not long after working in the Chicago meat industry, which meant containing a job, did the immigrants realize that America runs on "survival of the fittest" which meant they were preyed on because they were considered the weaker links to the citizens of America. Social Darwinism help Sinclair pick the title of the novel, because Packingtown was often referred to as "jungle of Darwinism". Sinclair does a very well job of portraying an accurate picture of the meat packing industry causing the image of the "American Dream" to get twisted around in the immigrants head. In the novel The Jungle portrays many different important values and issues that occurred in our country in past years that many Americans probably don't even know existed. .
Upton Sinclair was known to be a man with very little background when once a young kid, that was until it began to expand rapidly at the age of fifteen. Sinclair was born in Baltimore on September 20th, 1978. Although, his father was an alcoholic and his parents weren't economically unstable, Sinclair often spent periods of time staying with his wealthy grandparents. He was known to be religious with a great love for literature and school.
