             ) When you think of the prairie back in the 1800's you think of a vast amount of grassland. But when a prairie can be described involving all your senses you get a completely different opinion. Waving grasses that stretch off to the horizon in every direction, the clouds looking as though they have been painted on, wildflowers in all shapes and colors, insects buzzing and birds singing. Now, that is a description that makes you think and you can actually imagine that you are in the prairie land. Characteristics such as that are what my author Willa Cather focused on when describing the prairie in her books. She is well known for her depictions of scenery throughout the books she has written.
             B.) I have performed research on Willa Cather and read several of her works.
             C.) An understanding and knowledge of Willa Cather is important because she plays an important part in the influencing of American modernists" feelings and writings.

She grew up in Red Cloud, Nebraska. This town was in the middle of the prairie with the population consisting mainly of Scandinavian, Bohemian, and French immigrants. This environment impacted Cather's life as an artist and is one of the main sources of her vivid settings and depictions of characters in her books.
