Death of a salesman essay

Willy builds his life around a theory of being successful through appearance over work to escape the reality of being unsuccessful. Willy yells "That god dam Sudabaker!" (73) in frustration, which Willy's whole life has already been. Willy selfishly defines success with laziness and fate. By misinterpreting the meaning of the American Dream, he indulges a vision of paltry success, which he feels is deserving for him. A reason why Willy would think of such an unmoral concept of success would be from his loneliness. He develops an aura of abandonment when his big brother Ben leaves him in America, and this makes him want to share his views with his family to escape his solitary feelings. This feeling of being left behind makes Willy want to be comforted by a hope of some kind. Willy devotes his whole life to this illusion and he serves the affair with "the woman" as an ego booster for him to get the attention he wants. Prideness factorizes his allegiance to this apprehension as a person. Willy screams "I don't want your goddam job!" (37) to Charley to make himself feel confident that his beliefs are passable. He wants to share his success ideas to his family as another way to aggrandalize his self-glorifications. Willy wants to gain respect as a good father. This would augment Willy's self-esteem. Biff's conjectured potential in being successful attracts Willy's vision because it also serves as an ego booster. Biff influences Willy to be confident because of Biff's possibilities to gain achievement. When Willy dramatically changes from proletarian depressed to cheerful overnight after Biff's job searching announcement, it shows how Willy clings to his resilient faith in every way he can by pursuing hope. As Willy holds on to this concept, he starts to obtain side-effects. He inclines so dependent from this desire that he starts believing in his own lies, such as when he obtains enthusiasm after he tells his family that he made more money than he actually did.
