Earth Conservation Corps

 

            It is essential that we keep our environment safe and clean so that we may continue to partake of its beauty and Earth Conservation Corps (ECC) is an organization that has dedicated itself to just that. ECC's main office is located in Washington DC on 1402 1ST ST SE, WASHINGTON, DC 20003. Their mission is to restore the environment, educate, inspire and train corps members and strengthen the communities by improving the economy. The ECC is dedicated to helping the environment, through restoration or simply keeping safe the existing nature, and also focuses on its members. One of ECC's main goals is to help young, troubled kids and s find something that they like that might help keep them out of trouble. They teach these members about the environment along with giving them training to fulfill their environmental jobs.
             The ECC is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1989 as a White House initiative. The corps members give 1700 hours to helping the environment, through cleaning, protecting nature and its endangered wildlife and also providing community service to their community. This earns Corps members a $9,600 stipend, health insurance and child care benefits as well as a $4,700 scholarship. The ECC received the Silver Medal Award from the American Rivers Foundation in 1997, won the Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Management in 1998, named a Founder of the New Northwest by the Presidents Council for Sustainable Development and nominated "Conservationist of the Year" by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in 1999. Then in 2001, Robert Nixon, the ECC Executive Director, received the Harvard Foundation Award for his notable contributions, including giving hope and success to many young minorities through environmental work. In October 2001, Mr. Nixon was awarded the Chesapeake Bay Foundation Environmental Educator of the Year. .
             The ECC is a statewide organization but is mainly focused in the Washington DC area.
