Jack in saying that his name is Earnest,at the end of the story is found to be telling the truth as it is revealed to him and Algernon's lie of being Jack's brother is also found to be true, when they find Jack's real parents.
Another conflict that occurs in the play is marriage. It is presented to us as an ritual,an automatic acting that doesn't include romance or feelings but it depends on social status or name.As Gwendolyn and Cecily are not sure if they could love someone who's name wasn't Earnest : "It has always been my ideal to love someone by the name Earnest."Furthermore the play deals with some other important as well issues such as death, morality, religion, art, etc. This values are criticized in a sarcastic way.
Through the play the word "Earnest "has a double meaning, which functions as a name and an adjective of seriousness. The whole play is depended on this theme. It mocks this "earnestness" as the characters that don't act earnestly are rewarded with love and are proven under certain circumstances that they were indeed earnest.Algernon,Earnest,Cecily and Gwendolyn were willing to lie to get what they wanted, but were not delusioned. They were at least honest with themselves, their earnestness is not of telling the truth but its earnestness of going after what they wanted. They have to keep up with the social morals at all costs. The play lightly shows the limitations and unhappiness produced by such a way of life.
Moreover in the play "Mrs.Warrens profession" societal morals conflict with the individual need.In the case Mrs.Kitty.Warren,she is a woman who because she lacked any professional skills and didn't have enough money, was forced to become a prostitude.Although such a profession is against the beliefs of the society, she is not ashamed of it but is proud of the money she gains. When asked by her daughter Vivie if she feels any shame she says :"it's expected of a woman".This answer shows that the only reason she should be ashamed is because society believes so.
