What does it mean to be a mature responsible adult? What is the process to becoming a mature responsible adult? What are the benefits of being a mature responsible adult? Rudyard Kipling's poem "If" answers the questions we all wonder. How do we become mature adults? Kipling describes first how to ignore what other people think about. We do not have to worry what other people say about us, because then that will make us vulnerable to more attacks. A mature adult should be able to walk away from gossiping and hating others. We should live with respect and compassion for everyone. We need to have integrity, be able to work hard, and live a life that will be an example to others. If we think that we have reached a mature level, we have not. Everyone is constantly growing, maturing, and learning new things. Even when we are old and gray, life still has its little lessons. Kipling says and adult is someone who is loyal and stands up for himself. I believe that a mature adult is someone who is honest, compassionate, and loyal.
One example of being a mature adult is to possess the quality of honesty. Honesty is being able to live a life of no lies and no masks. "If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue" (26) is an example of being honest. I make sure that in my life I tell people all the truth. I do not live two lives. The dictionary defines honesty as marked by or displaying integrity. Honesty is a great characteristic to have. Not many people like to be involved with someone who can not tell the whole truth. People are drawn to someone who can live an honest life. .
Another example of being a mature adult is to possess the quality of compassion. Compassion is being able to see into others feelings and sufferings and wanting to fix them. "Do not deal in lies do not give way to hating" (6,7). Life should be full of compassion. We should be compassionate about life. The only way we can do this is if we do not hate or gossip.
