Gatsby is a difficult character to characterize because there are two lives you have to look at. You have to look at his true life, what hid did and more importantly what he wanted and how he got it. Then along with that you have to look at his new life, the one he created for himself, his dream world where money can buy him everything and anything he wants.
In Gatsby true life he could never be content with what he had. Gatsby always wanted more even when he became very rich and had everything he was not content. He needed Daisy. Gatsby did love Daisy but the whole reason why he wants her so much now than before is because everything he has done up to the day he met Nick was to get Daisy. His parties were to attract Daisy, his wealth and stature was to attract Daisy. But even when Gatsby gets Daisy and she tells him she loves him he is not content. He needs her to tell Tom that she never loved him. Then again when Tom beats him in the fight and it is very clear Daisy is going to stick with Tom Gatsby doesn't think it is over. He never gets to act because he is killed within days of the fight. Gatsby on the outside is nice, honest, caring and I think he really is that way but he has another side of him that is very determined to get what he wants. This causes him to ignore his honest side and get his wealth through bootlegging. He never seems to have any regrets about it at all which shows just exactly how determined he is.
