In the first chapter of "The Catcher in the Rye" by J. Salinger, the narrator, Holden Caulfield, tells us quite a few things about himself and his family. He has on brother that is in the movie writing business and as far as his parents are concerned we find out that they are nice, but irritated easily. He, up until now, attended a school named Pencey Preparatory School, in Angresown, Pennsylvania. He has been expelled from his school because he wasn't attentive enough, although he was the manager of the fencing team. The story starts off with him standing on the top of a hill next to his ex-school, watching a football game between his school and Saxon Hall, thinking about saying goodbye to Pencey and preparing to go over to his teacher, Mr. Spencer's", house as he was asked to do. The chapter ends with his being greeted by Mrs. Spencer and her telling him to enter Mr. Spencer's" room.
             Chapter 2.
The second chapter of the book mentions the actual conversation between Holden Caulfield and Mr. Spencer. Mr. Spencer, sick as he is, tries to lecture Holden about how his life is a game and how he should start caring about his future. He also tries to explain why he made Holden fail history, the class that he taught, because he obviously felt quite bad about it. While Holden is polite, he doesn't really seem to care much about leaving the school, but he does feel some sympathy toward old Mr. Spencer, because he realizes how bad he feels. At the same time though he is slightly frustrated by the way Mr. Spencer repeats things while talking. Holden makes up an excuse for leaving and does so, thoughtful of what he has been told, but without taking anything into deep consideration.
             Chapter 3.
In chapter three, Holden goes back to his dorm in the Ossenburger Memorial Wing. He shares a room with a friendly senior called Ward Stradlater, who was currently at the football game with his date. In the room next door, with which his room was connected in order to share a bathroom with the people living in it, lived another senior called Robert Ackley.
