For a few days I deleted books and the compliments about the speed I do the task and how hard I had worked kept coming. The full time workers started to tell me about there experiences working for the library and if they enjoyed it. Majority of the full time workers disliked working for the library. Their argument was that they didn't get paid enough. The tasks that were required weren't fulfilling and were very boring. Time pasted and soon the only task I couldn't do was work behind the main desk checking books in and out because there were regulations against volunteers doing it. Many of the task I did were delete books from the data base, renew the dates books were allowed in the system, do other volunteers timesheets, renew the stickers the books used to keep organized on the shelf, create the stickers used for the books, and help organize the RIFT program which was organized to give children one free book per week. I was soon offered to work at the library as a part timer after my community service was done. I turned down this job because I felt I wasn't ready to work part time and go to school at the same time. These were my experiences working at the Brooklyn Public Library.
Personally I believe the services I performed did not satisfy my personality. The main reason behind this is because I believe it is a very boring and effortless job being a clerk. The advantages to volunteers at this library is I got to see a "behind the scenes" of how the library system works and how the librarians contribute to this system. I got to hear the experiences of other fulltime workers in the library, and gained the experience of a part time worker since I had never had a job before. As for the disadvantages, I believe there were none; this new experience was very worth while. What I disliked about the service was the amount of time wasted when I was done with my task for the day. There were times when there was simply nothing to do but sit down and watch the clock tick away.
