Tour of the Watson-Stiefel Theatre

The tour I attended with my Business Law class was one of few that I can recall ever being interesting for me. I enjoyed this particular tour because of the theatres history with my home town, and the interesting approach taken by the tour guide Eddie. Eddie was probably my favorite part of the whole tour; he is an older gentleman, with a lot of background tied into that theatre (not to mention some of the random bits of humor and history he uses to keep everyone's attention). In the tour he described the setting of the town, theatre, and people of the times when he was a teenager working at the Watson shortly after it opened its" doors for business. Not many people like to hear the ramblings of a tour guide, and most of the time I don't either; but this was different. When he was describing the overall setting of the time, he was able to paint the whole picture of the setting not just some of the "points of interest" that most books and novels do. This in turn brought the past to life for me and kept me hooked throughout the tour. His ability to "tell a story", in a sense, was a major plus on the side of "cool" for my class. A close second to Eddie in terms of favoritism, I would have to say that the overall setting and feel of what it was like in the 1930's and 1940's. Local history has always been a favorite of mine and I do believe that it is necessary to preserve such things for our older generations; which in turn become us, then our kids, and so on, until the history is merely there to remind us, and future generations of what our community and life was built upon. To conclude, I believe that this tour was a learning experience (not to mention, fun) for me. And not for this chance to share my opinion most people in my community would not get this chance to visit and experience such a time such as 1940 Salina, Kansas.
