Macbeth Essay

 

Macbeth's actions drove him, as well as Lady Macbeth, to feelings of intense guilt that neither of them knew how to deal with. Their actions and decisions ended up taking them so far into their murdering ways that it was close to impossible to turn back and try to make right of what they had done. The selfishness that Macbeth felt ended up taking over him, overpowering any feelings he had of goodness. The intensity of Macbeth's greed leads him to do whatever it took to get what he wanted. The effects of evil, the result of all the blood-shed that Macbeth was responsible for, not only affected the victims and their families but had a multiplying affect on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
             The characters in Macbeth brought a variety of personalities to the play. Macbeth's character was original a stubborn, yet decent man. Things take a turn for the worst when Macbeth decides that he wants to be King, and the only way for this to happen is for Duncan to be killed. Macbeth was a selfish man, and his selfishness leads him into instability. Even though Macbeth started out as somewhat a man sensitive to morals, he quickly changed and made his life committed to getting what he wanted at any cost, often at the cost of others lives. He was always ambitious, knowing what he wanted, yet not always sure of how to get it. This is where Lady Macbeth comes in. When she first decides to work with Macbeth and help him kill Duncan, she doubts Macbeth is capable of committing such a crime. She calls upon supernatural spirits to make her cruel, and help her become immune to feeling. .
             .
             "Come, you spirits.
             That tends on mortal thoughts, unsex me here;.
             And fill me from the crown to the toe top full.
             Of direst cruelty. Make my blood thick- (Act 1, Scene 5, Line 47-50).
             She started of strong, stable, and determined but soon after the first murder, the murder of Duncan, she starts to lose her mind. She begins to sleepwalk, and has in depth conversations in her sleep, often speaking of her attempts to wash the blood of her hands.
