King lear

            
             Nemesis is a retributive force indicating that the good are rewarded and the evil are punished. In several of his famous plays, the great playwright, William Shakespeare has characters who become victims of nemesis. In Shakespeare's tragedy, King Lear, several of the characters become victims of nemesis. The evil, malicious deeds, of characters like Goneril, Regan and Edmund eventually face the forces of retribution. .
             One of the play's most manipulative and deceitful characters in King Lear's eldest daughter, Goneril. At the very beginning of the play Goneril's evils at work as she tells her father how much she loves him in order to get a share of Lear's property. Once she has secured her share of the kingdom she disregards her father and attempts to get him out of her life. She treats him poorly as she demands her servants to "Put on what weary negligence you please" (I,iii,13). Goneril plans to ignore her father and instructs her servants to do likewise. Goneril does not stop there after manipulating and deceiving Lear but she plans to turn her sister against him as well. She announces "I"ll right straight to my sister/to hold my very course" (I,iii,26). It is not enough that she is mistreating Lear but she decides to instruct her sister to do the same. She also joins forces with evil Edmund, has an affair with him and asks him to kill her husband Albany for her. She is driven by this intense love for Edmund, and when she suspects something between her sister and Edmund and she becomes very jealous and turns against her own sister. Goneril kills her sister Regan with poison as the last of her evil deeds. After realizing what she has done Goneril suffers from an enormous amount of guilt and commits suicide. By the end of the play we can see that Goneril suffers for her deeds as she does not get Edmund the love of her life and ends her own life out of remorse. It can been seen that at the beginning of the play Goneril evil deeds are justified at the end, as she does not get the love or Edmund and ends up dead just as sister faces a similar fate.
