In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman.
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish. .
Thus, ideals and unrealistic standards of body image manifested by the media and advertising inhibits individuality, and health in girls and women. Today, men manage the majority of media companies worldwide. While some women have advanced into media leadership, men make most of the decisions about what does and what does not constitute news. In addition, women are not moving into leadership positions in the media in numbers that reflect their numbers in society. Since women are not represented in large numbers in the media in general, it is not surprising that there are even fewer women in high level positions in the media. The Radio-Television News Directors Association in the United States reports that women are 24 percent of news directors in television and 20 percent of those in radio. Similarly, the American Society of Newspaper Editors reports that women are only 34 percent of newsroom supervisors in the United States.
Unrealistic standards of body image by the media inhibit individuality for many reasons. Basically the media has decided what is "beautiful- and uses that image as template for millions of girls and women across the country to aspire to. The media targets young women at the precipice of becoming their own being and basically sways their perception of what one should be to be accepted in society. I am applauded at the media's attempt to repress individuality amongst young women. The same old proverb can be applied here, " if everyone looked the same, life would be boring-. However, the media and advertising does not see it this way. For example, they see that young women must forgo their individuality and in exchange must buy into the media's "individuality-. This "individuality- of unrealistic body weight and plastic surgery that the media has contrived is rather dismal and trite and leads to unhappiness and inability to fully know whom you really are.
