This kept happening until they accused the town mayor's wife of being a witch. The mayor had the three sisters killed for being possessed by a witch. Superstition has followed us into the 21st century. Witchcraft has been thought to be closely related to the Satanist religion. Those accused were usually tortured until they confessed and then punished, fined, hung, burned, or drowned.
Many thoughts about Salem float around the history books of today. Some believe that Witchcraft is just a hallucination of the mind under stress, other believe that it is real and should not be taken as a joke. Whatever the case is there are strong feelings on both ends. During the late spring of and early fall of 1692 there were 141 witches arrested. Nineteen of them were hanged, and one was pressed to death. During the trials against the witches there were many false accusations against them. One of these accusations what the use of familiars. Familiars are pets of witches, like advocates you might say, that do their work and are usually found in the form of bats, rats, mice, birds, cats, snakes, and small reptiles. The witches were often encouraged to confess thier crimes or face torture. There were two girls in Salem that would fake being bewitched in the courtroom and get innocent and guilty accused witches killed or punished.
Although many witches have been executed, they still practiced their magic and it is a religion known all around the world today. The people in Salem were afraid of the witches and that is why they tried to cleanse Salem. But their persecution of witches sparked curiosity in the hearts of many people and they wanted to try it. Witchcraft has spread through Salem and all the world. Witches have been thought to be advocates of the devil because they have demon like rituals that they follow. The real fact is that there are so many rumors about witches that no one will know the truth unless they do research themselves.
